I am very excited to be joining the London team at Lingua-World Translation Agency – London, UK and am really looking forward to (finally) putting my language training to the test! After graduating last year from the University of Exeter with a first in French and German, I was determined to try my hand at translation and project management. So I’m here at our headquarters in beautiful Cologne while my German colleagues train me up ready to take on (UK) translation and interpreting projects.
So far, so (very) good. My first couple of weeks have been chock-a-block with learning and new experiences; from organising events to proofreading, customer service and of course some translation – that’s the beauty of project management – there’s always so much to do you can never get bored!
I am slowly getting used to the woeful lack of crumpets and Dairy Milk over here and the friendliness of everyone around me definitely makes up for it. Not a nation to disappoint in the productivity department, the German team here are the very model of efficiency – they give the office such a motivated atmosphere, you can’t help but be buzzed for the next task.
The best thing for me so far though has to be working with the translators and interpreters themselves. Over the past 6 weeks I’ve talked to so many lovely, chatty and helpful language people who, although notoriously busy, still find time to deal with a complete newbie and answer questions, explaining to me the ins- and outs of the industry – the kind of thing you can only learn once you get out there in the real world of translation. They say the fastest way to learn is on the job – and by golly am I learning!
